Nigerian-born Victor Olisa to become the new Metropolitan Police's Strategic Lead for Diversity

The Borough Commander at Haringey, Chief Superintendent Victor Olisa, is leaving his post after three years and moving to become the Met’s Strategic Lead for Diversity and Inclusion, as part of a reorganisation within the Metropolitan Police.

Victor will replace the Met’s senior expert on diversity and inclusion, Denise Milani, who is now moving to concentrate fully on her new role as Director of Business Change.

Chief Superintendent Olisa said:
"It has been a tremendous three years for me in Haringey, a time that I have enjoyed immensely and during which I have had the good fortune to work with many extraordinary members of the community and partner agencies, and many brilliant officers and staff. We have achieved significant reductions in crime, seen confidence in the police increase and developed strong working relationship with many different communities and partner agencies. I shall miss working here greatly."
"It’s a great privilege to be appointed as the Met's new diversity lead and I’m looking forward to continuing Denise’s work. We’ve come a long way but there’s still more we can do to become a police service that’s more diverse and inclusive."

Nigerian Military debunk Amnesty report

Nigerian Military debunk Amnesty report

The Nigerian military has completely disassociated itself from the report of Amnesty International which claims that some civilians died in a detention cell at Giwa Barracks, the statement reads.

On Wednesday, the London-based rights group in a new report claimed at least 149 people, including babies and children had died at a military detention facility for Boko Haram suspects and urged Nigeria to shut down the camp.

"The accusation comes as a surprise and shock because the organisation has accessed the facilities and made recommendations which were implemented. It is rather unfortunate that an organization of higher repute such as Amnesty International could come around to release a report which is completely baseless, unfounded and source-less with the intent of denting the image of the Nigerian Armed Forces. We will not be deterred by this report, but would remain committed to the task we have started against the Boko Haram terrorists until they are annihilated. We are calling on all well meaning Nigerians and International Communities to discountenance this report as it has no iota of truth. The Nigerian Armed Forces uphold the tenets of observance of human right and dignity of lives of innocent individuals as enshrined in the Conventions and Charters of the United Nation which Nigeria is a signatory. This one sided report is defective in all intent and purpose and does not portray the sincerity of Amnesty International as well as reflecting the true situation in Giwa Barracks now."

Nigerian Army responds to non-payment of soldiers allowances

Nigerian Army responds to non-payment of soldiers allowances

The Nigerian Army has explained the reasons behind the non-payment of soldiers' allowance in the last six months. According to the statement issued by Army Acting Director of Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman:
"The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to some stories going round the media circles with the title “Disquiet in the war front as soldiers complain of unpaid allowance” alleging that there was problem in the Nigerian Army due to non-payment of allowances to some soldiers serving in the North East.
In particular, they were alleging non-payment of outstanding peacekeeping operations allowance of troops that served in Guinea Bissau under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States and operation allowances to some troops in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, among others.
The issues contained in such publications are not true nor correct. While some media treated the matter professionally, giving the military benefit of doubt and sought to know the truth, others mischievously went to town with the false story without recourse to ethics of the profession and bothering to find out from the military.
The effort of the former is quite commendable and really appreciated, while that of the latter is quite unfortunate.
For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to inform the public that the issue of non-payment of peacekeeping operations allowance is a minor internal military administrative matter which was treated and resolved accordingly and has no bearing on the fight against terrorism and insurgency as they mischievously alleged.
It should be reiterated that the alleged non-payment of operations allowance among the returnee peacekeepers was due to administrative hitches which was solved to the point that all outstanding peacekeeping operations have been paid and the last batch payment was done last Tuesday.
As regards to payment of operations allowances, the NA had earlier inform the public of the compliance with the Federal Government directives on e-payment, BVN and TSA. All officers and soldiers are now paid their operations allowance directly through their bank accounts.
All those that did not receive theirs was due to non-compliance with the directive of giving correct account details and issues relating to recent postings. This has been explained to all those affected and efforts were on to rectify same shortly.
Our troops have been receiving their allowances regularly. Already issues relating to troops welfare have been of utmost priority to Mr President and the Army leadership. This is evident in current very high level of morale of the troops.
We would like to once again thank those responsible media outfits that showed understanding and maturity in reporting issues of national defence and security professionally."

Grace who has since the incident remained worried narrated her experience. She said, “I left my office at about 5:00pm and stood at the front of my office waiting to board a tricycle popularly known as Keke Napep.
“There was a red jeep with tinted glasses parked nearby.
“Soon after I got there, a man in the car reversed to my direction, pointed a gun at me and ordered me to board the vehicle.
“Out of fear that I would be shot, I boarded. There was no one around the area to have rescued me even though I had screamed for help; unlike before, there were no Military personnel at the entrance gate to my office, no one was in sight at that moment.
“When I boarded, I realised they were two men in the vehicle. They set the car in motion and forcefully took everything in my possession including my laptop bag with a new red laptop inside, the charger, the mouse, an Etisalat handset.
“A black handbag containing my e-passport, foreign currencies worth 500 dollars, ATM cards, N13, 000 and some other documents.
“After collecting all my belongings, they said to me, ‘We don’t want to rape or kidnap you, we only wanted to get your things. Where do you want us to drop you off?
“They eventually dropped me off along the road by a dual junction.
“I alighted and found my way home. I asked my sister to go with me to the bank so we could block the ATM cards and discontinue further usage. Her card was in my possession when I was robbed.
“While we were at the GTBank, I called my number using my sister’s line and the robbers picked up, saying I should come and meet them so they would return half of my properties they stole.
“I just hung up and didn’t go anywhere.
“After blocking the ATM cards, we went to my office, reported the case and from there, I went to the Bar Beach Police Division at VI.
“I lodged a complaint and the police Inspector told me to go home, that they would do everything within their powers to bring the robbers to book,” Grace added.
When contacted, a police source at the Bar Beach division told our reporter the case is a known one.
According to the source, “The robbers are not relenting in their operations in Lagos state but all hands are on deck to make sure they are all brought to face the law.
